Dr. Yacov Shamash
Dr. Yacov Shamash serves as the Co-Chairman of the Board for the Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC) at Stony Brook University. Previously, he was the Vice President of Stony Brook’s Office for Research and Innovation, where he played a key role in overseeing the university’s incubators, workforce development initiatives, and multiple New York State Centers for Advanced Technology and Centers of Excellence. His leadership helped advance research in fields such as medical biotechnology, sensor systems, and integrated electric energy systems.
A champion of industry-academic collaboration, Dr. Shamash spearheaded the creation of the Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence (SPIR) program in 1995, uniting SUNY’s engineering colleges to support businesses. Through this initiative, Stony Brook University has contributed to over 3,100 projects in partnership with nearly 500 companies, securing more than $105.9 million in federal funding.
From 1992 to 2015, Dr. Shamash served as Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook, guiding its growth from 1,500 to over 5,000 students. Under his direction, the college significantly enhanced its academic standing, increasing incoming students’ average SAT scores and expanding annual research expenditures to $30 million.
Before joining Stony Brook, Dr. Shamash was the Director of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University, where he helped establish the National Science Foundation Industry/University Center for the Design of Analog/Digital Integrated Circuits. He has also held faculty positions at Florida Atlantic University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Tel Aviv University.
Currently, Dr. Shamash serves on the boards of Keytronic Corporation, Applied DNA Inc., the Long Island Software & Technology Network (LISTnet), and the Long Island Angel Network. A graduate of Imperial College London, he has authored over 130 publications and is recognized as a Fellow of the IEEE for his contributions to the field.
