Ross Ain

President, Caithness Long Island, LLC

Ross Ain is President of Caithness Long Island, LLC and a seasoned leader within the Caithness organization, where he has played a central role since joining in 2000. Over more than two decades, Mr. Ain has guided numerous high-impact energy infrastructure projects, notably spearheading the development of the Caithness Long Island Energy Center, a state-of-the-art combined-cycle natural gas facility located in Yaphank, New York.

His influence has extended well beyond Long Island. Mr. Ain was instrumental in advancing the Caithness Shepherds Flat wind project in Oregon—at the time, the largest operational wind farm in the United States—as well as the development of the Moxie Freedom Generating Station, a high-efficiency, greenfield natural gas plant in Berwick, Pennsylvania. He remains actively involved in Caithness’s ongoing initiatives across Ohio, West Virginia, and Montana, helping to shape the future of energy in multiple regions.

Prior to joining Caithness, Mr. Ain held several senior executive positions in the energy sector, including Vice Chairman of Cogen Technologies Generating Group, Senior Vice President of Cogen Technologies Energy Group, and President of East Coast Power. During this time, he contributed to the advancement and operation of natural gas power facilities across the U.S., most notably the Linden Cogeneration Plant in New Jersey.

Mr. Ain began his professional journey in public service, first as legislative counsel in the U.S. House of Representatives and subsequently as counsel to the House Energy and Commerce Committee during the drafting of critical energy legislation in the 1970s. He later served as Associate General Counsel at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), where he led initiatives that laid the groundwork for the independent power sector. From 1980 to 1994, Mr. Ain was a partner at the Washington, D.C.–based law firm Van Ness Feldman, where he advised developers in the renewable energy and cogeneration space.

Mr. Ain earned both his Juris Doctor and undergraduate degree from Columbia University, where he completed his legal studies at Columbia Law School and his Bachelor of Arts at  Columbia College.
